U.S. Steel Restarts Pollution Controls at Clairton Coke Works

The pollution control systems at U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works facility is reported to be up and running. The fire incident which took place at the facility in December 2018 had caused significant damage to equipment and buildings. Also, it had impacted the operation of the units essential for safe operation of desulfurization process for coke oven gases. The repair and restart was completed well ahead of the April 15 target set by the company.

Meantime, the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) stated that it will now commence a comprehensive assessment of violations since the fire incident, in order to assess the amount of resulting civil penalties. ACHD will continue to be aggressive and proactive to ensure air quality through intermittent inspections and follow-ups, it said. At the same time, it appreciated the efforts put in by the company in completing the repairs ahead of schedule.

U.S. Steel, in a statement, noted that the Clairton Plant now desulfurizes 100% of the coke oven gas generated at the facility. The restart of operations of the state-of-the-art desulfurization plant is an important milestone in its repair efforts. U.S. Steel will continue to monitor and adjust coking times as and when needed, it added.
