Stamford, Connecticut-based Nestle Waters North America (NWNA) was selected as the winner of 2019 Design For Recycling (DFR) award by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). The company’s Pure Life bottle made from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate plastic (rPET) won the award. The prestigious industry award is in recognition of the product design centered on recycling and the use of recycled plastic in the making of the bottle.

The bottle demonstrates fully circular economy as it is made from 100% rPET and is 100% recyclable after use. In addition to that, the company has paid utmost attention to recyclability during the design phase itself. For instance, the specially-designed pressure-sensitive label in the bottle could be easily released during the wash stage of the recycling process, making it possible to be used again in the manufacture of new bottles. It must be noted that traditional adhesive labels could not be released during recycling process.

Robin Wiener, president of ISRI commended Nestle for its commitment to uphold the invaluable environmental benefits by using recycled plastics in the manufacturing process. Moreover, the unique labeling system has helped to improve the quality of the recycling stream, he added. While saying that the award is particularly significant, Fernando Mercé, president and chief executive officer of NWMA assured that the company will continue to design its packaging with recycling in mind.

The award was presented to NWMA during the recently held 2019 ISRI Convention and Exposition in Los Angeles.
