Cameroon declared official inauguration of the first specialized e-waste and electrical waste recycling centre in Central African region. The Ewankan Centre, located in the capital city of Yaounde, was inaugurated jointly by Pierre Hele, Cameroon’s Minister of the Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development and Gilles Thibault, the French Ambassador to Cameroon.

The facility was developed by the French association Solidarité Technologique, as part of a vast programme called Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment in Cameroon (WEECAM) launched in 2017. The project aims to implement industrial scale collection and recycling of electronic waste from cities of Yaounde and Douala over the period of next five years. It plans to engage mobile collectors to collect used electronic devices from households. The collected e-scrap will then be sorted for repair and reuse. The non-repairable waste will be handed over to specialized recycling centres for proper dismantling. The Ewankan Centre is expected to process nearly five tonnes of e-scrap per year.

The association plans to open a similar plant in Douala and a total of 12 waste collection points in the cities of Yaounde and Doula in the near future.

Cameroon has been a victim of informal management of electronic waste, which has led to emission of toxic chemicals into the environment, posing threat to human and other living beings. The region has so far lacked adequate environment-friendly e-waste management facilities.
