Soft drink majors Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have announced their decision to leave the Plastics Industry Association- a trade association that represents plastics industry. They now join other companies such as Clorox, Becton Dickinson and Ecolab which had cut their ties last year.

According to Coca-Cola, the positions taken by the plastics lobbying group were not fully consistent with the company’s commitments and goals. Meantime, the spokesperson for PepsiCo noted that it had originally joined the Association to learn more about innovating with materials. It has now decided to end its membership at the close of this year, she said.

The decisions by the top beverage companies come in the wake of efforts by consumer-goods companies to boost their recycling efforts. As per sources, pressure from Greenpeace has also led to these companies breaking their ties with the trade association. Incidentally, Greenpeace had recently cited Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle as the world’s biggest producers of polystyrene plastic trash.

Meantime, Plastics Industry Association spokeswoman termed the decision as unfortunate, stating that large consumer brands such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are integral to making sustainability commitments into realities.

Coca-Cola has committed to have 50% recycled material in all of its packaging by 2030. Similarly PepsiCo aims to significantly reduce its plastic consumption and use 25% recycled plastic by 2025.
