The Kenyan Environment Ministry has urged manufacturers to express their commitment to a take-back scheme that promotes collection and recycling of plastic bottles. Mohammed Elmi, Chief Administrative Secretary called for increased support to the initiative from the manufacturers and users of plastics.

The Ministry plans to deploy teams comprising of members of the youth empowerment programme under the National Youth Service in various parts of the country. The team members will volunteer collection of plastic bottles and storage of the same at designated locations for recycling at a later stage. The scheme would follow the practices set by PETCO recycling company in Souith Africa and will be advocated by Coca Cola-one of the world’s largest producers of PET bottles.

Mr. Mamo Boru, Director-Environment Education, National Environment and Management Authority (NEMA) emphasized the need for partnerships to bring in more players into the PET waste scheme. He called for better co-operation among county governments and various government agencies. Meantime, Mr.Sachen Gudka, Chairman, Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) noted that significant progress has been made since the enactment of a framework for the take-back scheme.

The initiative aims to deliver cleaner environment to its citizens. It must be noted that the scheme involves collection of used plastic bottles for a fee. The bottles thus collected will be later recycled at designated facilities.
