The recent research study conducted by McKinsey & Company in collaboration with Innovation Fund Denmark notes that the country’s economy is likely to benefit by approximately $152 million per annum, if the plastic waste ending up in incinerators are recycled properly. The study highlights the economic and environmental benefits of switching to recycling plastics.

According to McKinsey, the historically effective waste management system has resulted in traditionally low levels of plastic waste pollution in Denmark. However, the country is deeply affected by the plastic waste challenge in several ways. Denmark’s western coastline is exposed to plastic litter. As per estimates, up to 1,000 tons of plastic waste per annum is collected from Denmark’s western coast every single year. The Skagerrak region functions as an accumulation area for marine litter.

In the short term, the country should focus on prioritizing research and development on plastics. Further, it should develop innovations in technologies, so as to boost the recycling rates. Currently, Denmark recycles only 13% of the plastic waste it generates. The huge gap between Denmark’s plastics packaging recycling rate and the EU targets of 50% and 55% in 2025 and 2030 respectively highlights the scope of innovation in recycling.

Switching to plastics recycling is likely to benefit Denmark in many ways. Apart from protecting its environment, the country could save money on importing virgin plastics materials. In addition, recycling would also lead to creation of hundreds of new jobs.
