The average UAE resident produces 17.2 kg of e-waste annually

The piles of electronic wastes across the world have gone to all-time high records, creating a need for more e-waste recycling plants. In general, electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world. An extensive amount of waste ends up in landfill sites across the Middle East.

In the United Arab Emirates, a company initiated the construction of a facility at Dubai Industrial Park, after a UN-sponsored research project stated that the average UAE resident produces 17.2 kg of e-waste annually, amounting to one of the region’s leading average production in electronic waste.

Operations recently started in 2018, with phase one comprising state-of-the-art equipment being capable to process 39,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually. The facility of 21’000 m² will serve as the region's largest center of expertise for electronic waste management and recycles electronics and specialized wastes.

It is set to recycle all sorts of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment, ranging from consumer and industrial to commercial and military appliances. It will recycle electronics used by consumers as well as industrial appliances, including specialised waste such as aerosol cans and light bulbs. That includes air-conditioners, batteries, IT equipment, household appliances, and mobile phones. The center will also be the only dedicated refrigerant reclaim facility in the UAE.

No chemicals or water involved in the recycling process

The new facilities will recycle only through granulation processes which means that no chemicals or water is involved in this process. The dust that comes of this process will also be captured and processed. The plant will also be completely solar-powered with photovoltaic panels installed throughout the building.
