As an increasing number of wind turbines reach the end of their service life, the disposal of retired wind turbine blades has become a growing challenge for the renewable energy industry. To address this issue, SUNY GROUP has developed a Wind Turbine Blade Recycling Machine that converts waste composite blades into reusable fiber materials through crushing, liberation, and separation processes, providing a practical solution for the resource recovery of decommissioned wind energy equipment.

Wind Turbine Blade Recycling Process

Wind turbine blades are often tens of meters long, making direct processing impractical. Therefore, the blades are first pre-cut into smaller sections before entering the recycling system.

The pre-cut blade sections are fed into a double-shaft shredder for primary size reduction, transforming large composite materials into smaller, manageable pieces. After the initial shredding stage, the material passes through a second double-shaft shredder for further size reduction, improving the efficiency of the downstream liberation process.

The shredded material is then conveyed into a vertical hammer crusher for intensive crushing. Through high-speed impact forces, the fiberglass is effectively separated from the resin matrix. The crushing section is equipped with a pulse dust collection system to control dust emissions and improve the working environment.

After crushing, the material is transported by a high-pressure pneumatic conveying system to the separation section, preparing it for fiber recovery.

Main Equipment Configuration and Separation Principle

The complete recycling line mainly consists of double-shaft shredders, a hammer crusher, a cyclone separator, a classifier, and a flotation tank.

The cyclone separator first removes resin powder and lightweight materials through airflow separation. The material then enters the classifier, where fine and short glass fibers are separated according to particle size for more precise classification.

The remaining material is transferred to the flotation tank, where materials are separated based on density differences. During the flotation process, balsa wood and larger fiber bundles are effectively separated and collected, while heavier materials settle for recovery.

The final output consists primarily of two fiber products: short fine fiberglass and longer fiber materials. Compared with traditional landfill or incineration methods, this recycling process enables material recovery while reducing disposal costs and environmental impact.

Taking the ZYW800 Wind Turbine Blade Recycling Line as an example, the system has a processing capacity of approximately 1 ton per hour, an installed power of about 461 kW, and an overall footprint of approximately 40 m × 20 m × 5 m. It is suitable for wind turbine blade recycling companies, industrial solid waste treatment facilities, and composite material recycling projects.

Applications of Recovered Materials

The goal of wind turbine blade recycling is not simply to reduce material size, but to preserve the value of fiberglass as much as possible. The recovered fiber materials can be used in cement reinforcement, concrete fillers, insulation products, recycled boards, and composite manufacturing.

In addition, some processed mixed materials can serve as alternative fuels for industrial applications, further improving resource utilization.

For wind turbine blade recycling projects, a complete crushing and fiber separation system not only solves the challenge of blade disposal but also creates opportunities for recovering valuable composite materials, improving the overall economic value and sustainability of recycling operations.
