In the recycling of waste PCBs, many recycling companies typically crush the entire circuit board directly; however, this method results in high-value components becoming mixed with the substrate, thereby increasing the difficulty of subsequent sorting. The electronic component demounting machine developed by SUNY GROUP utilises a technology that separates components from the board through heat-assisted desoldering. This enables the rapid separation of the circuit board from the electronic components without damaging the components’ structure, thereby creating better conditions for the recovery of precious metals, the purification of copper resources, and the stable operation of the equipment.

Compared to traditional manual disassembly methods, this equipment requires only two operators to achieve continuous production, significantly reducing labour costs. It also employs an automatic temperature control system, which regulates the solder melting temperature to facilitate component detachment, thereby preventing metal oxidation losses caused by overheating.

For circuit boards containing high-value electronic components such as CPUs, IC chips, gold-finger connectors, and surface-mount capacitors, this separation method maximises component integrity, thereby creating greater value for subsequent precious metal extraction.

How Pre-Dismantling Processes Enhance Recycling Yields

Electronic components and PCB substrates are, in fact, two entirely distinct categories of recycling materials.

PCB substrates primarily contain:

  • Copper

  • Glass fibre

  • Epoxy resin

Electronic components, on the other hand, are rich in:

  • Gold (Au)

  • Silver (Ag)

  • Palladium (Pd)

  • Copper (Cu)

  • Nickel (Ni)

According to publicly available industry research data, the gold content in high-grade electronic components is typically far higher than that in standard PCB substrates. If processed by direct crushing, these high-value components would be diluted into the mixture, leading to increased costs for subsequent sorting and smelting.

After processing by an electronic component disassembly machine:

  • The first fraction consists of bare PCB boards.

  • The second fraction consists of detached electronic components.

After Disassembling the Circuit Board

These two types of material can then enter separate recycling processes.

Once the bare boards pass through the crushing, grinding, air classification, and electrostatic separation systems, the composition becomes more uniform, significantly improving the efficiency of separating copper from non-metallic materials; the purity of the copper powder typically reaches 95%–98% or higher.

Meanwhile, the dismantled electronic components can undergo separate precious metal extraction, preventing high-value metals from being diluted within large batches of material and thereby enhancing overall recovery yields.

For electronic waste recycling enterprises processing over 500 tonnes per year, the pre-dismantling process often enables a return on equipment investment within a relatively short timeframe.

Reducing Equipment Wear and Environmental Risks

From an operational perspective, the value of PCB dismantling machines extends beyond mere recovery yields.

Electronic components contain ceramics, steel, plastic casings, and various irregularly shaped structures. If these are fed directly into the crushing system, this can lead to:

  • Increased wear on cutting tools;

  • Increased load on the crusher;

  • More frequent replacement of screens;

  • Reduced stability of the sorting system.

Front-end disassembly effectively reduces the impact on downstream equipment, thereby enhancing the operational stability of the entire production line.

Furthermore, the equipment is fitted with an exhaust gas treatment system that centrally collects and purifies fumes generated during the heating process. Compared to open-heating disassembly methods, this effectively minimises the spread of smoke and dust as well as the emission of harmful gases, better meeting the current environmental requirements of the electronic waste recycling industry.

By adopting a ‘disassembly first, sorting later’ process philosophy, the electronic component disassembly machine achieves efficient separation of components from circuit boards. This not only enhances the recovery value of precious metals but also reduces equipment wear and improves environmental performance. Judging by current trends in the construction of modern e-waste recycling plants, component pre-disassembly is evolving from an optional process into a standard feature of high-efficiency PCB recycling production lines.
