Firstly, the sidewall cutter, which is primarily used to remove the steel belts from both sides of the tyre. The purpose of this step is to separate the high-strength steel structure in advance, thereby reducing wear on subsequent equipment whilst improving overall processing efficiency.
Next is the rubber strip cutter, which cuts tyres with the sidewalls removed into long strips. This process effectively ‘dismantles’ the whole tyre, preparing it for further processing.
The third step involves the rubber block cutter, which further cuts the rubber strips into smaller rubber blocks. This block structure is better suited for entry into shredding or grinding equipment, whilst also facilitating storage and transport.
Finally, the steel wire separator is used to strip residual steel wires from the rubber completely. After this stage, the purity of the rubber is significantly improved, allowing it to proceed directly to subsequent processing stages, such as the production of rubber powder or recycled rubber.
The Process Logic Behind the Equipment Configuration
These four machines are not simply stacked together, but operate progressively according to the processing logic of ‘load reduction – decomposition – refinement – purification’. First, the high-hardness structure (steel cord rings) is removed, followed by structural disassembly (strip cutting), then size refinement (block cutting), and finally the separation of impurities (steel cord stripping).
This segmented processing approach offers two practical advantages: firstly, it reduces the load on individual units, thereby extending their service life; secondly, it allows for flexible adjustment of production pace according to raw material conditions. For instance, tyres of different sizes can be accommodated during the initial cutting stage without affecting downstream processes.
For entrepreneurs with limited capital, this modular configuration offers greater control than a one-off investment in a complete automated system and facilitates gradual expansion and upgrading during actual operation.
From Small-Scale Start-ups to Automated Expansion
Once the supply of raw materials is stable and production demands increase, one may consider introducing a fully automated tyre recycling production line, integrating the aforementioned processes into a continuous operation system to achieve integrated crushing, sorting, and grinding.
However, it should be made clear that the small-scale equipment phase serves more as a ‘proof-of-concept’: verifying whether the supply of raw materials is stable, whether there is a market for the products, and whether the recycling process runs smoothly. Only once these fundamentals are established is it prudent to scale up investment.
In practical operations, three key factors should be prioritised when selecting equipment: whether the processing capacity matches the supply of raw materials, the reliability of the cutting tools’ wear resistance, and the ease of equipment maintenance. These factors will directly impact long-term costs.
Overall, small-scale tyre recycling equipment is not a ‘low-spec solution’, but rather a more pragmatic entry strategy: entering the industry with lower trial-and-error costs, gradually establishing the recycling chain through a combination of equipment, and then scaling up operations based on market feedback.
