Spiral Shredder for Jumbo Bags

Addressing the challenges posed by flexible plastic waste—such as used jumbo bags (FIBC / bulk bags) and PP woven bags—which are difficult to process and prone to tangling in machinery, SUNY GROUP has developed a spiral shredder. Utilising a low-speed, high-torque drive and a spiral cutting roller structure, this machine enables the continuous cutting and volume reduction of bulk bags, providing a stable front-end pre-treatment solution for subsequent washing, pelletising and resource recovery.

Working Principle and Structural Features of the Spiral Shredder

Unlike traditional high-speed shredders, the screw shredder employs a single-shaft spiral cutting design. Its core components primarily include:

  • Feed system

  • Spiral cutting roller

  • Fixed blade housing

  • Drive system

  • Discharge conveyor system

Working Process:

During operation, FIBCs are fed continuously into the inlet either manually or via a conveyor; the material is gradually drawn into the cutting zone by the spiral cutting roller. The surface of the cutting roller is fitted with specially arranged carbide blades, which, in conjunction with the fixed blades inside the housing, create a shearing action to cut large-sized tonne bags into uniform fragments before discharging them.

Distinct Advantages:

  • Strong gripping capability for soft materials, with minimal slippage;

  • A continuous and stable cutting process, reducing material blockages;

  • Low-speed operation, resulting in relatively low dust and noise levels;

  • Effectively reduces the risk of PP woven bags becoming entangled around the shaft.

For lightweight, flexible materials such as tonne bags, bulk bags, chemical packaging bags, feed bags and agricultural woven bags, this design offers greater adaptability than standard disc-type shredders.

Key advantages for FIBC tonne bag recycling

Used tonne bags are typically bulky and highly resilient; feeding them directly into subsequent recycling equipment can easily lead to conveying difficulties and reduced processing efficiency. Consequently, front-end volume reduction has become a critical stage in the entire recycling process.

The screw shredder can cut intact tonne bags into fragments ranging from 5 to 300 mm in size, facilitating seamless integration with subsequent conveying, washing and pelletising processes. Depending on the model configuration, the equipment’s processing capacity ranges from 100 kg/h to 1,500 kg/h, meeting the production needs of small and medium-sized recycling stations as well as large-scale recycling enterprises.

  • SMC-3200F (Large-scale): Can process approximately 1.5 tonnes of waste FIBCs per hour, making it suitable for large-scale recycling production lines.

  • SMC-800F & SMC-1200F: Better suited for start-up recycling enterprises or regional recycling centres.

Value in Plastic Recycling Production Lines

With the widespread use of FIBCs in the chemical, construction materials, grain and logistics industries, the volume of waste FIBCs being recycled continues to grow. As FIBCs are bulky and incur high transport costs, direct recycling is often economically unviable; however, after volume reduction via a screw shredder, their size can be significantly reduced, thereby improving storage and transport efficiency.

For enterprises engaged in the recycling of PP woven bags, FIBCs and flexible plastics, selecting a spiral shredder suited to their production capacity requirements helps to enhance overall recycling efficiency and achieve the resource recovery of waste packaging materials.
